Preventing Malware (Adbots)

To download (free) the program to remove Malware (Adbots):

1. Double-click Internet Explorer on your Display screen
2. Go to AD-Aware
3. On the right side of the screen, click on the big green button "Download Ad-Aware Free" .
4. Scroll down a little, & click on the big blue "Download Now" button.
5. Run the program & follow the next prompts by continuing to click Next
6. Click Finish
7. Close at the top right X

To remove Malware:

1. Double-click Ad-aware 2007 Icon on your Display screen
2. Click Scan Now
3. Select Full Scan
4. Click Scan
5. The "Performing System Scan" window will display. This will take about 10-15 minutes.
6. When complete - select the Privacy Tab located at the top of the screen
7. Place a check in the box in the white center screen to select the items to be removed
8. Click Remove
9. Click Finish
10. To make sure your computer is clean of Malware, it is recommended that you reboot your computer and run the Ad-aware program again by clicking on the Ad-aware Icon on your display screen. We recommend you do the Perform system scan a minimum of once a week.

To Update your Ad-aware:

1. Double-click Ad-aware on your Display screen
2. In the lower right corner click on “Check for Updates Now”
3. Click on Connect
4. If there are Updates, click OK
5. Check for Updates once a week

Mozilla

Free download – web and e-mail applications suite:

1. www.mozilla.org
2. Click on Free Download in the green box
3. Click on Run
4. Click on Run
5. Click Next
6. Click on “I Accept the Terms of License Agreement” and click Next
7. (Standard) Click Next
8. Click Next to continue
9. Click Finish
10. Uncheck “Always perform this check when starting Firefox” and click on No

Windows Updates

Steps for Windows Updates:

1. Click on Start
2. Go to Windows Update
3. Click on Scan for Updates
4. Pick Updates to install
5. For Critical Updates:
   1. Click on box next to Critical Updates
   2. Click on Review and Install Updates
   3. Click Install
   4. Click on Accept
6. For Drivers:
   1. Click on box next to Drivers
   2. Click on Add
   3. Click on Review and Install Updates
   4. Click Install Now
   5. Click on Accept

Anti-Virus Updates

We can’t stress enough the value of installing the live updates on a regular basis in your anti-virus program. This is the “core” to keeping your computer free of viruses. If your anti-virus program is more than 1 year old, Ex: 2002 or earlier version, it definitely needs to be replaced. To help keep your computer free of viruses, you must:

• · Purchase a new anti-virus every year
• · Install the live updates on a regular basis
• · Run the Full Scan on a regular basis

Installing Your Live Updates

• · If you use a dial-up Internet service, it must be connected first
• · From the Start Screen, in the lower right-hand corner of the screen near the clock, double-click on
• the Icon for your anti-virus program
• · Click on the Live Update button and it will install the latest update for you

Note: Depending on what anti-virus programs you use, it should be set to install the update automatically.

Removal of Temporary Internet Files

• Open Internet Explorer – don’t worry if it says, “Page cannot be displayed”
• Select Tools
• Select Internet Options
• In the center of the Internet Options window, click on Delete Files
• Select Delete Cookies

To Completely Remove All Temporary Files
of All Types From Your Computer

• Double-click on My Computer
• Right-click on “C” Drive
• Select Properties
• Select Disk Clean up
• It will calculate how much space will be gained by running the service
• In the Disk Clean up window, put check marks in everything that has a number next to it
• Click OK then Yes to delete them
