Preventing Malware (Adbots)
To download (free) the program to remove Malware (Adbots):
- Double-click Internet Explorer on your Display screen
- Go to AD-Aware
- On the right side of the screen, click on the big green button "Download Ad-Aware Free" .
- Scroll down a little, & click on the big blue "Download Now" button.
- Run the program & follow the next prompts by continuing to click Next
- Click Finish
- Close at the top right X
To remove Malware:
- Double-click Ad-aware 2007 Icon on your Display screen
- Click Scan Now
- Select Full Scan
- Click Scan
- The "Performing System Scan" window will display. This will take about 10-15 minutes.
- When complete - select the Privacy Tab located at the top of the screen
- Place a check in the box in the white center screen to select the items to be removed
- Click Remove
- Click Finish
- To make sure your computer is clean of Malware, it is recommended that you reboot your computer and run the Ad-aware program again by clicking on the Ad-aware Icon on your display screen. We recommend you do the Perform system scan a minimum of once a week.
To Update your Ad-aware:
- Double-click Ad-aware on your Display screen
- In the lower right corner click on “Check for Updates Now”
- Click on Connect
- If there are Updates, click OK
- Check for Updates once a week
Mozilla
Free download – web and e-mail applications suite:
- www.mozilla.org
- Click on Free Download in the green box
- Click on Run
- Click on Run
- Click Next
- Click on “I Accept the Terms of License Agreement” and click Next
- (Standard) Click Next
- Click Next to continue
- Click Finish
- Uncheck “Always perform this check when starting Firefox” and click on No
Windows Updates
Steps for Windows Updates:
- Click on Start
- Go to Windows Update
- Click on Scan for Updates
- Pick Updates to install
- For Critical Updates:
- Click on box next to Critical Updates
- Click on Review and Install Updates
- Click Install
- Click on Accept
- For Drivers:
- Click on box next to Drivers
- Click on Add
- Click on Review and Install Updates
- Click Install Now
- Click on Accept
Anti-Virus Updates
We can’t stress enough the value of installing the live updates on a regular basis in your anti-virus program. This is the “core” to keeping your computer free of viruses. If your anti-virus program is more than 1 year old, Ex: 2002 or earlier version, it definitely needs to be replaced. To help keep your computer free of viruses, you must:
- · Purchase a new anti-virus every year
- · Install the live updates on a regular basis
- · Run the Full Scan on a regular basis
Installing Your Live Updates
- · If you use a dial-up Internet service, it must be connected first
- · From the Start Screen, in the lower right-hand corner of the screen near the clock, double-click on
- the Icon for your anti-virus program
- · Click on the Live Update button and it will install the latest update for you
Note: Depending on what anti-virus programs you use, it should be set to install the update automatically.
Removal of Temporary Internet Files
- Open Internet Explorer – don’t worry if it says, “Page cannot be displayed”
- Select Tools
- Select Internet Options
- In the center of the Internet Options window, click on Delete Files
- Select Delete Cookies
To Completely Remove All Temporary Files
of All Types From Your Computer
- Double-click on My Computer
- Right-click on “C” Drive
- Select Properties
- Select Disk Clean up
- It will calculate how much space will be gained by running the service
- In the Disk Clean up window, put check marks in everything that has a number next to it
- Click OK then Yes to delete them
